Formentera beaches 2026: fewer sunbeds and umbrellas, more natural freedom
The General Directorate of Coasts and Coastline has decided to drastically reduce the number of authorised sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches of Formentera for the period 2026–2029. Compared to the initial proposal of the Consell, the island will have to withdraw a total of 681 sunbeds and 339 umbrellasleaving authorised 1,169 sunbeds and 589 umbrellas distributed across different beaches along the coast.
The beaches affected by this resolution are Cavall d’en Borràs, ses Illetes, Llevant, es Pujols, es Copinar and Migjorn. The measure is based on the criteria of the OCAMAT regulations, the Balearic autonomous order that regulates temporary installations on beaches, imposing minimum distances of ten metres from the sea, limitations on the length of occupied sections and additional environmental conditions.
Which beaches will retain their organised sunbed service?
In this new scenario, the beaches that will keep a more structured offer of beach services will be mainly It’s Pujols and some areas of it’s Arenals. Here visitors will find it easier to locate sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, managed by authorised concessionaires.

The Consell defends the balance between sustainability and the local economy
The Minister of the Environment of the Formentera Consell, Verónica Castelló, has stated that the institution acted at all times within the legal deadlines and procedures, although it does not agree with the excessively restrictive criteria applied in the resolution. The Consell acknowledges the need to protect the coastline, but argues that environmental sustainability must be compatible with the economic and social reality of the island and with the entrepreneurs who rely on beach tourism.
The resolution has authorised the marking of beaches and the three sailing schools on the island, so nautical services remain unaffected.
